[Risolto] Arch si blocca inaspettatamente su PC vecchio

Ciao a tutti.
Mi e' appena stato dato da mio zio un PC che era destinato alla demolizione equipaggiato con:
CPU intel celeron 466 mhz
256 MB di RAm
VGA S3 graphics Savage4 (aggiunta da me)
8 GB di HDD e io ne ho aggiunto uno da 20.

Non so per quale motivo arch su questo pc non va.
Ho provato un paio di distro in modalita' live prima di installare arch e tutto funzionava bene, anzi il PC era inaspettatamente veloce.
L'installazione di arch si e' conclusa senza problemi ma dopo qualche minuti di utilizzo arch sistematicamente si blocca, nel senso che la schermata rimane fissa e nessuna periferica viene piu' riconosciuta (mouse tastiera e adattatore USB wi-fi).
Inizialmente ho pensato fosse un problema al disco data che le live andavano bene e ho reinstallato arch sul disco da 20 GB che ho aggiunto ma anche cosi' dava lo stesso problema.
Ho provato allora ad installare Crunchbang (debian) e tutto va a meraviglia.

Ho provato anche a fare qualche ricerca su wikipedia per essere sicuro che il processore sia i686 e dovrebbe esserlo.

Idee?

EDIT: dimenticavo, avevo installato anche su arch openbox senza DE come su Crunchbang, in ogni caso si bloccava anche in modalita' testuale.

Non vorrei che fosse un 586... Quanto hai di swap?
Io ho recentemente avuto un kernel panic per la swap satura, nonostante fosse di 2 GiB (forse qualche programma/daemon bacato visto che ero in runlevel 3)

Avevo 512 MB di Swap ma non penso fosse satura, anzi, credo non la stesse usando nemmeno. La CPU era sotto sforzo ma la ram no.
Comunque credo che sia un 686; linko quello che ho trovato su wikipedia:

Il mio processore dovrebbe essere del '99 quindi i686 perche' successivo al '95

ad occhio, problema di scheda video . . . prova a confrontare l'xorg.conf della arch installata con quello delle live che funzionano . .

Qualsiasi celeron esso sia, è un i686 in quanto celeron.

Il discorso degli anni non è molto significativo, gli AMD K6 ad esempio non erano completamente i 686.

Si' in effeti anche questo c'e' scritto su wikipedia.
Dunque a questo punto potrei provare a mettere una VGA diversa, volendo avrei una vecchia scheda PCI da provare.
Non ho ancora confrontato i file xorg.conf ma mi e' venuto in mente che, riscontrando il problema anche in modalita' testuale X non dovrebbe centrare

Si, se ti succede anche fuori da X (attenzione, con X killato, non solo dopo aver switchato in una console lasciando X attivo) xorg non c'entra. Magari dai un'occhiata ai log.
Offertissima: Mi Vendo!!! Cercasi lavoro o corso di formazione finanziato in tutta italia da Roma in su, oppure in provincia di Catanzaro.
In particolare sono interessato ad opportunità su Roma.

prova a dare un'occhio ai log per vedere se dicono qualcosa di interessante . . e per sicurezza puoi fare anche un test della memoria (memtest, dovrebbe esserci sul cd di arch)

Purtroppo adesso mi sono imposto di lasciar perdere per un po' di tempo altrimenti tutto andrà ad influire sull'esito dei miei primi esami!

Sono finalmente in una pausa tra esami e posso dedicarmi un po' a questo scassone!
Sto eseguendo ora il memtest dal cd di arch. Essendo la prima volta che eseguo la procedura vi chiedo: Ha una fine??:o
Ora sta andando da 2 ore passate e gli errori sono ancora a zero

Rispolvero la discussione dato che una febbre improvvisa mi ha concesso un po' di tempo da dedicare alla carretta.
Dunque, abbiamo appurato che il problema non e' la RAM. Ieri ho finalmente reinstallato arch su un diverso HDD. Avevo infatti installato arch nel disco da 8 GB e le altre distro in quello da 20 cosi' ho pensato fosse un problema di hard disk e ho installato arch in quello da 20 GB ma si e' bloccato di nuovo.
Ho notato pero' che prima di installare X, openbox e quant'altro l'ho usato almeno per un'oretta senza problemi; forse pero' e' solo un'impressione e magari avrebbe dato lo stesso quel problema.

edit: Confermo, non era un'impressione, ho acceso il pc per vedere se aggiornando il kernel cambiasse qualcosa e arch si blocca in cosi' poco tempo da non riuscire ad aggiornare.
A questo punto credo che il problema possa essere legato a:
- libgl
- Xorg
- Mesa
- Driver Savage
- hal e dbus
- Openbox (dubito)

(e relative dipendenze)

In quanto sono le uniche cose che ho installato finora (oltre ad alsa che dubito influisca).
Any idea?

Aggiungo che ieri quando ho installato hal e dbus, libusb-compact mi ha dato degli errori dicendo che dei file erano gia' presenti; non ricordo bene quali comunque la maggior parte di questi (vedi package contents):

Ho eliminato io i file a mano e a quel punto l'installazione (e tutte le successive non hanno dato problemi).
Sempre nel caso possa servire, mi collego alla mia rete wi-fi tramite penna usb wi-fi con chip ralink 2870.

Prova a installare un kernel vecchio,ad esempio la stessa versione di quello della debian funzionante (tempo fa un kernel recente che integrava nuovi driver per la scheda scsi adaptec mi provocava kernel panic); controlla pure la versione degli altri software usati da debian (driver savage ecc) e provali,metodo trial & error,anche su arch.

No ma le altre distribuzioni vanno.
E' arch che non va. Finora ho provato però solo la 2010.05 quindi magari è un problema di kernel che non ho mai potuto aggiornare proprio per il blocco. Ho provato l'ultima archboot ma non parte, forse perchè c'è troppa poca RAM.
Ho installato arch 2009.08 ma ci sono dei problemi con grub ma nulla di grave, adesso sistemo e vedo se quella va.

Ragazzi finalmente sono arrivato ad una conclusione!
Il problema era la chiavetta wi-fi che dava problemi; installando alla fine arch-2009.08 con kernel 2.6.30 sono incappato in un trafilletto della wiki dove si parlava di incompatibilità tra il driver rt2870sta e il kernel in questione e la cosa provocava proprio dei blocchi al sistema. Ho immaginato quindi che, per chissà quale motivo, potesse dare problemi anche con gli altri kernel che avevo provato così l'ho sostituita con una scheda wi-fi pci che mi hanno prestato e adesso tutto va a meraviglia!
